FAQ

Below is a general FAQ. It isn't exhaustive but will hopefully respond to the most common queries. If there is a specific question you wish answered, please email us at info@nycoedsoccer.com.

NY Coed Soccer was established in November 2004. Since our debut season on a Friday evening in Chelsea we've become one of the city's premier recreational leagues. We offer a welcoming environment for you to develop and hone your skills, exercise and meet new people. We play all-year round in various Indoor and Outdoor locations in New York City.

We are a main sponsor of the Luis Rojas Foundation, a not-for-profit organization whose aim is to promote a healthy lifestyle for underprivileged children through soccer in New York City, as well as Barnstonworth Rovers Old Boys, an amateur club in the Cosmopolitan League.

Venues vary from season to season but Chelsea, the Lower East Side and Williamsburg are our primary locations. Exact field details are confirmed at the opening of registration.

Individuals are welcome to register and will form part of a "free agent" roster or be assigned to a confirmed team in need of additional players.

In the week prior to the opening game, players will receive the League Introductory email. This contains relevant information for the season as well as the names and e-mail addresses of all on the roster. Players will then have the opportunity to communicate directly with their teammates.

Please note that Individual Male Slots are often limited during the initial registration period. We're a Coed League and thus need to ensure that male/female registration is at a rate appropriate to the compiling of rosters.

Subject to availability, NY Coed makes the utmost effort to place friends on the same team.

When submitting your registration, please highlight your colleague's name in the section marked 'Special Instructions' of the payment section. You should also follow this with an email to info@nycoedsoccer.com confirming the request.

Please note that it is important to register promptly to ensure we can group everyone together. Individual slots cannot be held.

Captains can register their team by making an Individual or a Team Payment.

When an Individual Payment is made, Captains will then be able to issue an Invite to their teammates. Players need to use this Invite to register and pay individually in order to confirm their slot on the roster.

When a Team Payment is made, Captains will then be able to issue an Invite to their teammates. Players need to use the Invite to register though in this instance they won't be prompted to pay. Payment of the Team Fee allows up to 16 players on the official roster. The Team Fee must be made as a one-off payment at the time of registration.

Please register a team only if you are confident of having the required number of players. For 5-a-side and 6-a-side Leagues this means a minimum of 9 registered players while for 7-a-side the roster should be 11 registrants.

If you happen to fall short of 1 or 2 players, we can help by assigning free agents. We cannot, however, take on the responsibility for more players than that.

Registering as a team should not be used as a way of circumventing a lack of individual free agent slots. When roster requirements haven't been met by a specified deadline, full refunds will be issued.

We understand that personal circumstances can change.

A full refund will be issued if a withdrawal occurs up to 5 days in advance of the season’s start.

A full refund will only then be issued if we can find a replacement player prior to the opening game. Thereafter refunds are pro-rated based on the number of games played.

No refunds are issued if a withdrawal occurs after Week 4 of the season.

For refund requests, please email info@nycoedsoccer.com.

Costs vary and are dependent upon the League. Typically, the Individual Fee ranges from $140-$155 with the Team Fee being $1,350 - $1,650.

Submission of a Team Fee allows up to 16 players on the official roster and costs are based on each team playing a minimum of 8 games during the season, unless otherwise specified.

The cost of a season is confirmed at the opening of registration.

A season typically lasts 10-12 weeks.

With Outdoor Leagues there is always the possibility of weather-related postponements. These games will be re-scheduled, thereby thus extending the duration of the season.

Duration of games vary and are dependent upon the League.

Typically the Manhattan and the Indoor Leagues are 21-minute halves while Brooklyn and Pier 40 games are 25 minutes per half. Details are confirmed at the opening of registration.

NY Coed provides the referees and Outdoor games are officiated under FIFA rules with a few exceptions. For example, there are no offsides and there is no slide-tackling.

Two female players must be on the outfield at all times - the goalkeeper does not count towards this number. There may be locations where 3 female players are required – this will be confirmed at the time of registration.

We ask players to remember that it's only recreational coed soccer. Yes, you want to win. But if it's a win-at-all-costs mentality then perhaps you're better suited to another League. Players should approach games in the correct spirit.

We monitor yellow and red cards and this will affect a player and a team’s ability to register for future seasons.

NY Coed has a zero tolerance for fighting and overly-aggressive behavior, be it physical or verbal. Players exhibiting such characteristics will be removed from the League - and in those instances the League’s decision will be final.

We are a little stricter than other Leagues about replacement rules. In part, it is to guard against teams bringing in ringers on any given week and thereby unbalancing the season.

More importantly, it is to ensure that all registered and paid players have as much playing time as possible and are not short-changed by unregistered players.

While the NY Coed representative in attendance will have a list of official players, we're not going to perform a roll call prior to each game - we expect teams to enter into the general spirit of the League.

If you believe the opposition are fielding illegal players, please advise the referee immediately - and "immediately" doesn't mean when you go a goal down. We will then double-check and confirm a player’s registration.

Should a team be short of players during any given week, they are allowed to bring in replacements to complement their roster. However, non-registered players are only to be brought in when rosters are severely depleted. And when we state "non-registered" we are referring to players not on your official roster. This may include outfield player(s) and/or goalkeepers.

Replacements, when required, can come from other teams within the League, or players that are not registered with NY Coed Soccer. If the replacement is coming from outwith the League, he/she must be identified prior to kick-off. And please ensure he/she is wearing a similarly-colored shirt to that of your team.

7-a-side: If a team has 8 or above registered players in attendance, NO non-registered players are allowed - unless those in attendance consist of 8 males & 1 female. Then a female sub is allowed.

If a team has 6-7 registered players, they are allowed to bring in additional non-registered players that will bring the roster in attendance to 8.

If a team has 5 registered players, they are allowed to bring in 2 non-registered players.

If a team has 4 or less registered players, then unfortunately the game will be forfeited and the result recorded as a 3-0 loss. A scrimmage, however, will be arranged for those in attendance.

6-a-side: If a team has 7 or above registered players in attendance, NO non-registered players are allowed - unless those in attendance consist of 6 males & 1 female. Then a female sub is allowed.

If a team has 5-6 registered players, they are allowed to bring in additional non-registered players that will bring the roster in attendance to 7.

If a team has 4 registered players, they are allowed to bring in 2 non-registered players.

If a team has 4 or less registered players, then unfortunately the game will be forfeited and the result recorded as a 3-0 loss. A scrimmage, however, will be arranged for those in attendance.

5-a-side: If a team has 6 or above registered players in attendance, NO non-registered players are allowed - unless those in attendance consist of 5 males & 1 female. Then a female sub is allowed.

NY Coed t-shirts are handed out to all participants at their opening game. We ask that players wear their official shirt each week.

If a team has a color preference, they should advise the League of their top three choices – and we'll try to ensure one of them is assigned. Captains will receive a list of options prior to the season's start.

Teams can wear their own shirts, if they wish. Please let us know in advance of the season's start in order we can assign colors to the rest of the League appropriately.

Outdoor fields are turf. The ideal footwear, therefore, are turf shoes although flat indoor shoes, sneakers and molded cleats are fine. No metal cleats.

Indoor fields are either the rubberized or the traditional hardwood gym floor. Flat indoor soccer shoes and sneakers are appropriate.

We strongly encourage the wearing of shinguards. Ultimately it is at the discretion of the individual but it does seem foolish not to take this simple precaution.

Our intention is to play rain or shine. There are instances, though, when the conditions are simply too miserable to expect people to come out - games postponed in these circumstances are re-scheduled for later in the season.

We will try to provide at least an hour’s notice with respect to the cancellation of games. Due to the vagaries of the weather, however, that may not always be the case - sorry!

If you're scheduled to play and are concerned about the weather, you can check the game status by viewing our Twitter and Facebook feeds or by emailing info@nycoedsoccer.com.

These are frustrating for all concerned. We monitor and keep a count of forfeits across all seasons. Teams with a history of forfeits will not be allowed to register for future Leagues.

If your team is unable to field the required number of players, please advise by 5pm at the latest. We can try to find substitutes – or, at the very least, provide the opposition with advanced notice.

If we’re unable to find additional players, we recommend coming out anyway. The field is available during the time slot and the referee/field reps will help to put on a game.

Forfeited games are recorded as 3-0. If a team suffers two or more forfeits, a part-refund will be issued to cover the loss of an official game.
